By Way of Introduction
At a now defunct Art School in the early Aughts, a bunch of us got together and founded an event called In the Margins. The idea was to break down barriers between disciplines at our weird little school in the woods and spend an evening sharing what we were creating – in whatever form that took – outside our classes. This website is that event in blog form.
The inspiration – In the Margins – was about art, design, writing, and photography, but Marginalia is more than that. It's about all the things we do and see and create that have been pushed to the side in the face of work, politics and, you know, all that – *gestures broadly to the state of things* – stuff happening in the world that is big and scary and seems inviolable when you're just one person trying to get by.
Other people will write about that mess. Other people are better at it.
Marginalia is for writing about everything else.
Behind the Blog
Right now, there's just me, Nicole. I'm a Product Designer by day and a whole lot of other things by night. I draw, paint, design, hike, build, cook, and parent. I'm a New Englander, raised and currently residing in Massachusetts, though I spent close to a decade in NH in my 20s where I attended the aforementioned "weird little art school".
Soon, I'm going to open this site up to submissions from others, first that circle of classmates and friends I did "In the Margins" with back in the day, and in the future maybe to a wider group of contributors. We'll see how it goes! Maybe it will just be me posting into the void forever. Thats fine too.
I hope you enjoy your visit! To get updates on new posts, follow Marginalia on Bluesky.
